- Birth CARSWELL Allan Prestbury Cheshire East PRE/14/5 1876
Three of my grandfathers brothers, Allan 1897(warehouseman), Thomas (gardener)1902,Robert (joiner)1905, emigrated to Wisconsin from the Macclesfield district ,Cheshire & all were involved in sales & /or management in the dairy industry .The reason for leaving was probably the lack of opportunity for meaningful work & the advent of a stepmother .My grandfathers age timing fitted with taking over from his father, the position of farm bailiff on the Lyme Estate.None of the 3 brothers ever returned home to Cheshire. The story goes that an old English aunt sent them the money to do so but without success as their wifes seemed to be anti English. This is incorrect as Allan returned from England 23 June 1904, maybe attending his brother John's wedding in April 1904
LIST OF MANIFEST OF ALIEN PASSENGERS FOR THE US IMMIGRATION OFFICER AT PORT OF ARRIVAL:-

So Allan may have emigrated in 1899 & in fact did return to England during his life. ie in 1904. His brother John was married in April 1904 .A wedding photo shows a man with similar characteristics to Allan.Allans wife Bertha had their first child in March 1904 in Wishik ND so he may have been free to go as his Bertha may have been staying with her parents.

CARSWELL M 1898 From Liverpool to Canada St Johns VIEW

From newspaper clipping in the Barbaboo News Republic dated Tuesday 24th April 1934 :- lived in Fourth St near Reedsburg and was formally field man of the Baraboo Valley Creamery Association. They were preparing to move to Eau Claire as a representative of the Elgin Butter Tub Company Ill . Later lived across the street to son John and his wife in Menomonie.
I will quote what Allan dictated to me to include in our family tree regarding his Grandfather Allan: "Emigrated from Poynton/Butley England Abt. 1891( really 1897 as per 1930 census) on ship to British Columbia, Canada. He worked on ship for passage. Came across Canada by train to Winnipeg where he worked for a dairy farmer nearby. The dairy farmer liked Allan and sent him to Dairy School in Minneapolis/St.Paul at the University of Minnesota, US. Graduated from U of M and went to work in dairy business. November 24, 1906 at 30 years old, he was first Manager and Buttermaker of the newly formed Farmers Cooperative Creamery Company of Clear Lake, Wisconsin. He served as Manager until March 15, 1919. He worked his entire life in the butter and cheese industry. He retired from the Elgin Butter Tub Company in Menomminee, WI Abt. 1946. He also opened a Standard Oil Service Station Abt. 1938 in Menomminee as employment for his youngest sons, Tom, John & Jerry." By Georgia Carswell .
Letter from Paula CarswellJan 03:-
Remember the filling station that Allan Carswell bought in Menomonie, WI in the 30's to provide work for his unemployed sons? Well just this November in the Menomonie paper they featured a story on this in the history section. There is a picture of the station.....actually there were two separate stories on it with a picture to go with each one. In one picture is shows John and Tom manning the pumps......On one it says "Carswells Parkview Station" and the other is a new sign that just says Parkview Station. In one of the articles it tells how Allan bought the station and a bit about the family.....it tells where Jerry didn't return from WW11 after being killed. (My husband Jerry was born in 1944 just after this Jerry was killed in the service and thus named after him)My point of all of this is if you would like to read these articles I will contact the paper the next time I'm in Menomonie or I can possibly write to them and get you a copy. Newspaper articles copy so poorly but I can try that too. It's quite interesting to us but whether you want it I'll leave up to you. At the end of the article it tells that John Carswell is still living in Menomonie and just turned 84 that week. And for your info....John and Dorothy still love across from the station in a pretty house across from the park. You can't see any of that in the picture....it's just of the station. Jerry's parents cared for his grandparents until their deaths and somehow inherited the station or bought the others out...not much value at that time. And Allan Carswell lived with his family in a house just behind the station which is still there at this time. The station now sells odd footstuffs. And Jerry's folks built just across from Grampa Carswell. Anyway every time we got to Menomonie we talk some about the days when that was a gas station. John still has some interest in that occasionally. John and Dorothy held onto that house and station for many, many years renting it out. There hope was that my husband would open a barbershop there and live in the house that went with it. Jerry was a barber when he was young.....before he was drafted into the Vietnam War. There he sustained an injury to his left knee and when he came home wouldn't have been able to stand all day cutting hair. He came to Superior, WI to college (he had always liked this area as he hunted and fished here) and met me and here we remain after 31 years. We're fortunate now that it is only a three hour drive to Menomonie as we travel it often. Anyway the owned the station and the house for many years after we were married.....always hoping I think that he'd move back there. Finally they did sell it. And when we were in Menomonie just yesterday we saw that the woman that now owns the house has a new garage on the property. I've never been inside of the house as it was always rented but Jerry said he always really liked it. Of course, he was very, very close to his grandparents and has only the best of memories associated with that home. Enough on that but if you would like me to send you copies of the articles I will get them for you. You may find them interesting.
