- Studied at medical school in Manchester 1900 to 1907 & then worked at Infirmary ,then became Medical Officer at the S. Manchester Hospital ,attached to the work house . In 1912 the Manchester Hospital Authority opened a Sanitorium here for Manchester patients & Colin was appointed the 1st Superintendant . He was there 1912 to 1915 , married a nurse at the workhouse hospital in 1912 l & in 1915 he had two children . In July he volunteered for service in the RAMC -went to Gallipoli & returned home in 1918 & moved north to Kendel . His wife died in 1948 . Colin retired a few years later & married the matron of the local hospital where he was Senior Surgeon. They went to live in Shropshire - the matrons home village - she was 17 years younger.
Robert Williams LRAM ,ARCM, FRCO. may have been the illigitimate son of Colin & a domestic nurse at the Sanitorium, He was born 13 Jan 1916. Robert has kindly sent me a lot of the Craig information.

The death occurred at his home "The Glebelands", Boraston on Thursday of Dr. Colin McKean Craig . Dr Craig was educated at Manchester Grammar School & Manchester University. He graduated M.B,B Ch (1905) & MD (1907) & later obtained his DPH. He was Successively House Surgeon at Manchester Infirmary , University demonstrator in Anatomy , Superintendent of the South Manchester Hospital & first Superintendent of the South Manchester Sanatorium, Abergele.
Soon after the outbreak of the Great War he volunteered for service in the RAMC & took part in the Expedition to the Dardanelles & in the subsequent evacuation.
He admired the Turks as soldiers ; & he was one of the small group of doctors which were designated to remain with the remnant of the Expeditionary Force in Turkish hands ,had that been necessary.
He afterwards went to Egypt ,organised a cholera clinic in the desert {despite an obstructive DDAMS who argued that since the Crimean War had been fought without microscopes they were just as un-necessary in 1917} & by doing so secured Allenby's flank against an epidemic which might have ruined the Palestine Campaign.
For these distinguished services he was awarded the OBE.
On returning to civilian life at the the Armistice he moved to Kendal where he built up a busy practice covering many miles of Lakeland & fell country & became Senior Surgeon to the County Hospital.
During WW 2 he was in charge of the Westmorland Blood Transfusion Service . He was for many years a member of the Westmorland County Council & latterly an Alderman. An ardent patriot , a generous & deeply devoted man ,a devoted doctor , & a charming host , he earned the respect of all his colleagues & the affection of his many patients.
On his retirement in 1954 he went to live at Boraston ,near Ludlow, there to cultivate his garden & to serve as church warden.
He is survived by his second wife Nellie Louise [nee Smallman formally Matron at the County Hospital ,Kendal] & by two sons & one daughter.

Many friends also attended the service.
