" My father said in the school holidays he went out to with old Uncle Tom when he was inspecting the hill roads& it was my fathers job to jump out & put bricks under the wheels of the trap when the pony stopped. My father was training as an architect but switched to road surveying to get a more outdoor life . He always hankered for after a life on the land. He started as a draughtsman at sixteen with Avery'the weighing machine firm in Birmingham & had many cricket & football fixture cards& memorabilia ect from the days when he played for them which he sent back shortly before he died to see if they we of interest to the current sports club. The day they received them they sent their Welfare Officer straight down to see if he was being well looked after - obviously still a good firm to work for.!!"
