Joseph Handforth remarried after the death of his wife ( at the birth of daughter May) . He remarried & had a son Frank. Joseph "died when the children were in their teens leaving them( the daughters) in the care of of their stepmother. They were each (the daughters)to inherit a considerable fortune when they reached the age of 21.but if they died before that age when they could legally make a will, the then the money went to Frank. Family talk said their stepmother did her best by neglect & semi starvationto bring this about. Both girls contracted TB but will power kept Jean alive until a few weeks after her 21st birthday& she willed her fortune to May. With the money & eventually her own ,May was able to get the best medical attention & survived. ". Source Betty Tandour.
