Joseph Handforth remarried after the death of his wife ( at the birth of daughter May) . He remarried & had a son Frank. Joseph "died when the children were in their teens leaving them( the daughters) in the care of of their stepmother. They were each (the daughters)to inherit a considerable fortune when they reached the age of 21.but if they died before that age when they could legally make a will, the then the money went to Frank. Family talk said their stepmother did her best by neglect & semi starvationto bring this about. Both girls contracted TB but will power kept Jean alive until a few weeks after her 21st birthday& she willed her fortune to May. With the money & eventually her own ,May was able to get the best medical attention & survived. ". Source Betty Tandour.

Brother Jimmy spent much of his youth with his maternal grandmother and uncles at Crossmill Farm. His talent was singing, and he performed on stage at concerts throughout the area. His stage jewellery, a ring with a large arificial diamond, is still in the family. Jimmy never married. He ran a small haulage business, until he died in 1947. Uncle John Keith took this over, and it continued until the late sixties. He lived in the family home at 130 Cross Arthurlie Street, until his father died in 1928. By that time Granny Keith and her children had moved in to look after her father. Following the death, the brother, sister and her family moved to a smaller house at 124 Cross Arthurlie Street. They could not afford to remain at 130. Jimmy stayed with Granny Keith until shortly before he died. He moved in with a family friend, Cathy Stevenson (nee Hay), and stayed with her for the remainder of his life. It does seem a pity, but despite Granny Keith looking after him for a number of years, he excluded her from his will, leaving his money, instead, to Cathy. He did however keep in touch with the family. There is a photo of him at Kirkton Mill, and he did visit there after Johan was born in 1947, he gave her a Sovereign which she wears in a brooch setting, so he wasn't too mean, was he? Cathy Hay (as she continued to be referred to) will be mentioned again later. She was Granny Keith's neice, by marriage.

Source Betty Tournier "I believe Herbert Room was in the Coal business. I understand he retired when he married my grandmother& handed over the business to his sons, but unfortuneately left the business in his own name.Presumably by mismanagement they bankrupted the business& ruined Herbert Room & I suppose my grandmother too.He was estranged from all his family & it was my father who looked after them both but I believe the shock killed him quite quickly. I have a presentation watch he left my father. "

Hi, I am Sheana Canfield's mom. My maiden name was Marie Jeannette Dunlop. My dad was John Dunlop, born Feb. 14, 1900. He was the son of John and Margaret. There was Jean, Peggy, Hugh, Nettie, Lizzie, Mary and John my dad. I was born in 1947.
Jean, her husband and dad came to Alberta in 1924, to the Red Deer area. The rest came later except Peggy. She married in Scotland and lived there til her death. She had 2 kids. Doreen and Sheila. Doreen just passed away last year at roughly 80 yrs. Very sharp lady to the last day. Sheila married Neil White and they live in Glasgow, also very sharp people. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year. Also in their 80's. My sister and I made a trip to Scotland in 2002 to visit and go see Laggon (the farm) on Islay. It was amazing. I wish I had known about the Stevenson side of the family when we were there.
I have been blown away seeing your email. I can't believe it.
I thought I would touch base with you. Marie Dunlop Canfield mariecan@cable-lynx.net Source Johan.

Hello John, 15 July 06 Sorry to be so late replying, but I had to write to a cousin who resides near Mt. Nessing to see if she could provide any information at all on "Ardyne". A reply has now been received. People called, Taylor, had the farm years ago, and then it was sold to, Cunninghams, then later to Groundwaters in 1972. The house was burnt down due to an electrical fault 12-15 years ago. It is situated on Chamberlain Road, Albury. Sonia didn't know the acreage, but it still being farmed. Also, you may like to know that the Albury School 125th Jubilee is being held next Waitangi Day ( February 2007). Just a little snippet of data which may be a little assistance to you. Regards, Marina Christchurch.

HI John – just back yesterday so your timing is perfect. I had a really successful trip. There were a lot of people there who knew both my mother and my grandfather. One guy in his 80’s told me he did Williams vege garden from the age of 7 ( everyone called him Bill ). All the people from the farms adjacent to Ardyne who remember growing up with my mother and playing with her as children were there as well. There were also people there who helped them pack up and leave when they moved to Timaru and the guy who bought Ardyne off my grandfather. He was a little vague and couldn’t quite remember whether Bill was still alive or not at that point. He said he bought it in 1948 but he couldn’t be too sure about that. Anyway there was also a guy there who has documented all the local history and he had all the maps showing all the farms. Ardyne was marked.
So off I went to go and find it – got completely lost, driving down gravel roads with no markings, hadn’t seen a sole for an hour and suddenly a car appeared, woman stopped and asked if I was lost. Told her I was looking for a farm that used to be in the area called Ardyne and blow me down she said – Oh I own Ardyne ! I had taken a wrong turn and was miles away from where I should have been. Couldn’t believe I ran into her!. She put me right and I managed to find it. There is nothing there but it is still intact as the original property and still known as Ardyne. The Groundwaters who own it are long time local residents over many generations and they own another property in the area where they live, they just use Ardyne for grazing deer. I spent some time wandering round, it was very pleasant and very peaceful spot. You can easily see where the house and graden was. The old out buildings form Williams time are still there and the gates etc.
I also found my maternal great grandmothers house in Timaru. That was the house Jessie grew up in – would have been quite a shock to have married William and moved to Ardyne – her house in Timaru is quite beautiful - a big mansion looking out over Caroline Bay – and then she moved to the middle of nowhere to a little farm house. The photo I thought might be Ardyne definitely isnt. The locals told me all the houses were built around the same time. In 1903 the large station at Albury was forcibly split by the government into smaller parcels and a ballot was held. William won one of the ballots and hence Ardyne. Everyone settled around the same time and builders came up form Timaru and built all the houses at the same time – all plain square boxes apparently . There was one guy who thought he might have a photo but wasn’t sure – the current owners didn’t have any photos.
I then went searching for Carswell – I couldn’t remember if you had located it. Spent the day at the Timaru Archives. I found all the information about the original split of the Levels station into smaller parcels – similar to Albury. Great grandfather William would have won a ballot presumably to get the Carswell property. I couldn’t find the maps and farm names however.
When I got home I found something that referred to where the farm was – next to a train station, the name of which I cant recall at the moment, – so if I so desire I could make another trip armed with that information and see if I can locate it – wouldn’t be too hard I suspect if I can find the old maps of where the train went.
I also couldn’t find William and Jessies grave – did you find it? I found Jessies mothers grave in the Timaru cemetery across the other side from where gg grandfather willams was. Ran out of time to go back to the council to search the records again.
I will send some photos of farm with a separate email
I am confined to home for at least 3 months now as I have submitted my passport for my French visa – here’s hoping!

09th Dec. 2006

Dear John and Christine,
Another year has flown by, and I must apologies straight away for not writing before.

On September 6th John’s mum Margaret passed away. On Monday 4th she had not drawn back her bedroom curtains as usual, so John went in at 8.00am to find her still in bed, complaining that she had had a bad night and had been sick. She said that she felt that she would be better to stay in bed that day. I called the doctor who said he would be round in the morning if she was not showing signs of improvement.

By Tues. morning she was feeling better and wanted to get up and dressed. The doctor did come at 11am and presented me with a prescription for her sickness. I rang to Jean to ask if she could come and sit with her while I went off for it.

When I returned Jean was just putting her back to bed. She stayed there for a couple of hours then wanted to get up again. She seemed to go very calm and kept gazing out of the window. She wanted to know was Jean coming again at night and whether David was coming too.

I felt concerned and managed to get hold of John who was hedge cutting, Jean and David came around 6pm. She had fallen asleep in her chair. When David came I tried to waken her but she had slipped into unconsciousness. We alerted the ambulance, but they too could not rouse her. John and Jean followed the ambulance to Macclesfield District General Hospital. They left at 10pm. At 4am we were woken by a call from the hospital to say the she had died.

She would have approved of the way that she went, and we could not have wished for it to have happened in a nicer way. She had had her 95th birthday in August, and living was getting to be a real struggle.

There was a wonderful service for her at Nether Alderley Church, followed by buriel in the church yard and buffet lunch in the Parish Room also in the Church boundary. She would have been so surprised at the fact that between 80 and 90 people attended, she always said that there would be very few at her funeral, because all her friends had gone before her.

She was a wonderful lady, and a very dear mother-in-law to me. She had been living next door to us for 35.5 years. Where do these years go to? I am so pleased that you called in last year, she really enjoyed meeting you again.

At this point we are not sure what we will be doing with the bungalow. At the moment I have two young boys age 15 and 16 years in there. They have come over from Malaysia. They have been spotted as young foot ball talent by Ken Barnes who used to play for Manchester City. They are here for nearly 4 weeks and go for training at Wigan.

I am still very busy with the B&B even at this time of year, and my Christmas preparations are very behind, but I do not mind as I have such nice people to stay.
I am still chair of the Cheshire Farm accommodation group, but I hope to cast the job in March, I have done it now for four years.

John is very busy with his hedgecutting again. He recovered from his hip operation in Jan last year very well, and is so much better at walking now.

Today we have been dagging lambs ready for taking to the butchers/market. We have put 88 inside where they can keep dry and clean. It has been quite wet here recently and the fields can get a bit muddy in gate ways, and the butchers want them clean.

Best Regards to you both and all your family. Have a very Happy Christmas.

Love From Isobel.

With the info I got from my great Aunt there is a little bit of written data about them. This is what it says James A. Joung and his wife Agnes with their sons and daughter emigrated to Canada in may, 1867. They settled on a tract of land (lot 15) which extended from the 1st to 2nd Con. Rds. in Mersea Twsp., Essex City., Ontario. East of Rd. 12. James had several brothers, 2- David and John also came to Canada, but did not settle in Mersea. Another brother went to Australia. James had backed a note for one of his brothers- the business failed and James was responsible for the debt. He had to sell his farm and Dairy business and being unable to live in the style to which they were accustomed, they emigrated. Built their house on the 1st conc. - their son, George Harvey, built his home later on the 2nd. Conc. on the same property. The story is told that George was named for a school master who left him several pounds of sterling. James borrowed this money to pay their passage to Canada, repaying George later. I'm sending another e-mail with more info. Kelly

The documentary evidence associated with the inquest--taken by the sheriff to determine identities, relationships, and claims to property and known as the Services of Heirs--is a particularly valuable if little known genealogical source. " My father said in the school holidays he went out to with old Uncle Tom when he was inspecting the hill roads& it was my fathers job to jump out & put bricks under the wheels of the trap when the pony stopped. My father was training as an architect but switched to road surveying to get a more outdoor life . He always hankered for after a life on the land. He started as a draughtsman at sixteen with Avery'the weighing machine firm in Birmingham & had many cricket & football fixture cards& memorabilia ect from the days when he played for them which he sent back shortly before he died to see if they we of interest to the current sports club. The day they received them they sent their Welfare Officer straight down to see if he was being well looked after - obviously still a good firm to work for.!!"
