The Peesweep Inn was half way between Neilston and Johnstone on the Gleniffer braes. The building is no longer there. The Peesweep lost its license in the 1890’s but was still operating in 1910. Sometime after that it was used as a private house until it was demolished in 1924. It is situated across the road from Caplaw farm, which is still on the map. There is an interesting old book, “Some Sylvan Scenes near Glasgow” by T.C.F. Brotchie published in 1910 which has a section describing the walk from Caldwell Tower, past Old Barn farm and on the Peesweep Inn. There is also a drawing of the Inn, and the landlady. Johan,
Thanks for your e-mail, and sorry it's taken so long to reply.
I also tie in with the Stevensons through my mother's maternal line. My ancestor is David Stevenson, presumably the brother of your ancestor Jean, and both children of John S and Jean W. I have quite a lot of info for that line - David S., my ggg grandfather, was a wine and spirit merchant, and landlord of the Peesweep Inn in Neilston. Booze seems to have run in the family. His brother Robert was a spirit merchant, his son Thomas was also a spirit merchant, and my great-grandfather (his son in turn), David, was a Brewery Manager amongst other things.
Apparently Neilston used to have about 40 pubs in the early 19th century - when the town had lots of cotton mills and other industry.
It's funny that you talk about family tales of links with RLS - we were just the same - my granny used to talk about it often - this has been my main impetus in researching this line of my family - I suspect there is no real trught in it.
I would be very interested to see the information you have, and will happily pass on what I have too.
    All the best.
    Richard.

    Hello Richard,
I hope we will be able to share some Stevenson information.
Unfortunately I don't go back beyond John S and Jean Wilson, but have loads of information on this family. I go back through my mother's maternal line to to gggreat grandmother Jean S, daughter of John S and Jean W.
Jean S m. Allan Carswell, daughter Margaret Jane Carswell married John McKay, daughter Jessie McKay married James Maxwell Sharp, daughter Margaret Jane Sharp (my grandmother) married Dugald Keith.
I have always been aware of family lore that indicated a link to RL Stevenson, and old letters written by a Carswell ancestor also talk of the link. But looking at the evidence it seems unlikely. Unless you have some more clues?
I can let you have a copy of the Stevenson data that I have on file if you are interested.
I will be very interested to know which Stevenson you relate to.
Look forward to hearing from you again

The documentary evidence associated with the inquest--taken by the sheriff to determine identities, relationships, and claims to property and known as the Services of Heirs--is a particularly valuable if little known genealogical source. The records of the Services of Heirs, now located at the Scottish Record Office in Edinburgh, provide authentic and reliable confirmation of the relationship between deceased individuals and their heirs
